How the top 100 is compiled — and how petrol cycles work
Stations are ranked by their most recent retail price for the selected grade. Petrol prices typically follow a repeating cycle — a sharp rise to a peak, then a slow slide through the discounting phase.
- Buying near the bottom of the cycle can save 5c–10c per litre in many markets, but local competition still matters more than the cycle alone.
- Prices are ranked by size or level, not freshness — always confirm the absolute price and update time on the live map before driving.
- Listings refresh in 15–30 minute cycles from official state price portals plus voluntary retailer disclosures; VIC publishes on a 24-hour delay and WA on a daily cycle.
- Pair any single-report snapshot with the price-cycle and forecast pages to judge whether today is a good day to fill up, not just where the cheapest station sits.
