How hikes are detected

How a price hike is detected — and how cycles work

A "price hike" means the station's last reported U91 price is at least 3c per litre higher than its previous listing, ranked by size of the move. The list updates as new reports arrive.

Built from reported source data

Station-level prices, refresh timing and cycle signals stay tied to the same source data.

  • Hikes are ranked by size, not absolute price. A station that lifts by 15c may still be cheaper than a competitor that hasn't moved — sanity-check against the local average.
  • When several stations in one suburb appear together, it can signal the start of a new cycle. Compare the local station list before filling a full tank.
  • Changes are ranked by when the retailer actually changed the price at the bowser, not when our system synced — so slower VIC and WA feeds show their real change time.
  • Listings update as supported state programs, retailer feeds and station records change. LPG and diesel often cycle on a different rhythm to unleaded.
