Fuel excise at a glance
Fuel excise is a tax the Australian Government charges on every litre of petrol, diesel and other fuels. It is a fixed amount per litre, built into the pump price, so it does not change when the station’s price does.
- Current rate: 53.7c a litre on petrol, diesel and E10 from 3 August 2026, and 17.5c a litre on LPG.
- Indexation: the rate is indexed each February and August, in line with the consumer price index. The next indexation is due in February 2027.
- GST on excise: GST of 10% is charged on the whole pump price, excise included, so the GST in a price is one-eleventh of what you pay.
- 2026 cuts: the rate was cut to 20.6c a litre from 1 April 2026 to 30 June 2026, then to 36.6c a litre from 1 July 2026 to 2 August 2026. The full rate returned on 3 August 2026.
- Share of the pump price: at the national U91 average of 240.9c, 53.7c a litre, or 22% of the price, is excise. With 21.9c of GST, 75.6c (31%) is tax.

How a pump price splits
Start with the pump price
Use the price per litre on the bowser or a city average. It already includes fuel excise and GST.
Take out GST
GST is 10% of the price before GST, so it is one-eleventh of the pump price.
Take out fuel excise
Excise is a fixed amount per litre set by the ATO and indexed each February and August. Petrol, E10, premium and diesel share one rate; LPG has its own.
Split the rest with the terminal gate price
The terminal gate price includes excise and GST. Without them it is the wholesale fuel cost; the rest of the pump price covers freight, running costs and the retail margin.
Price alerts
Excise is fixed. The rest of the price moves.
Every litre carries 53.7c of excise whatever the bowser says, so a lower price is cheaper fuel and margin. Get told when prices near you drop.
