Hybrid vs petrol questions
How much fuel does a hybrid save?
On official figures the hybrid uses 30% less fuel than the petrol version of the same model in a typical case, and costs less to run in 20 of the 20 models sold both ways. Hybrids save most in stop-start traffic and least at steady highway speeds.
How long does a hybrid take to pay for itself?
Divide the extra purchase price by the yearly fuel saving. At the current national U91 average a hybrid using 4.5 L/100km instead of 7 saves $897 a year over 15,000 km, so each $1,000 of extra purchase price takes 1.1 years to pay back on fuel alone.
Which hybrid saves the most fuel money?
Of the models sold both ways, the Kia Carnival hybrid (5.8 L/100km) saves the most against its petrol version (9.6 L/100km): $1,363 a year over 15,000 km at the current national averages.
Does a hybrid need premium fuel?
Some do. Check the fuel flap or handbook: several hybrids on the list take premium 95, which narrows the saving. The calculator prices each version at the grade you choose.
