Road trip fuel cost calculator guide
Estimate road trip fuel costs from distance, fuel use and pump price, then check where to fill along the route.
Compare toll and toll-free routes by fee, fuel, time and distance.

A toll road may be worth using when the toll fee is no greater than the fuel it saves plus the value you place on the time it saves. A free route is cheaper when its extra fuel cost is still below the toll. There is no fixed national answer because distance, traffic, toll class, direction, fuel use and time saved all change by trip. The cash-and-time comparison does not override road safety, access or reliability.
| Input | Toll route | Free route |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | Road-route kilometres | Road-route kilometres |
| Travel time | Minutes checked in the same short time window | Minutes checked in the same short time window |
| Fuel cost | Distance ÷ 100 × L/100km × $/L | Distance ÷ 100 × L/100km × $/L |
| Toll fee | Current fee for vehicle class and direction | $0 |
| Cash cost | Fuel cost plus toll fee | Fuel cost |
Toll-route cash cost = toll-route fuel cost + toll fee. Free-route cash cost = free-route fuel cost. Keep time separate until both cash totals are known.
Route fuel cost = distance in kilometres divided by 100, multiplied by the vehicle's L/100km, multiplied by the fuel price in dollars per litre.
Use the same vehicle and a current local price for both routes. If traffic or stop-start driving changes your real fuel use materially, replace the brochure figure with a measured figure from a comparable trip.
This is illustrative arithmetic, not a current toll quote. Assume the toll route is 28km and 30 minutes with a $7.20 toll. The free route is 36km and 45 minutes. The vehicle uses 8.0L/100km and fuel costs $2.00/L.
| Route | Fuel cost | Toll | Cash total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toll route | $4.48 | $7.20 | $11.68 |
| Free route | $5.76 | $0 | $5.76 |
The toll route costs $5.92 more in cash and saves 15 minutes. The break-even time value is $5.92 divided by 0.25 hours, or $23.68 per hour. On these assumptions, the toll route becomes worthwhile only when the driver values those 15 minutes above $5.92 and the time estimate is reliable.
The planner's displayed trip fuel estimate can use the recommended station's reported price and its return detour. Treat that as a whole route and recommended-stop scenario, not an isolated toll-versus-free fuel comparison. For the toll decision alone, use each route distance with the same vehicle efficiency and fuel price.
FuelRadar asks the routing provider to avoid toll roads where possible. Avoidance is a preference, so check the reported toll sections in the returned route. FuelRadar does not calculate the monetary toll fee.
For Sydney, the Service NSW motorway toll calculator provides a one-way trip fee and warns that the return direction can cost a different amount. For Melbourne, Transport Victoria lists CityLink, EastLink and the West Gate Tunnel and links to the relevant operators. For Queensland, Transport and Main Roads lists the current toll-road network and payment provider. The Linkt toll calculator covers its Sydney and Brisbane routes.
A return trip is not always twice the one-way toll. Direction, entry and exit points, distance, vehicle class, and the pass or account used can change the amount. Calculate each direction separately when the government or operator calculator says charges differ.
First calculate the extra cash cost of the toll route. Then divide that amount by the hours saved. The result is the hourly value needed to justify the toll. Use a value that reflects the actual trip. Fifteen minutes before a fixed appointment is different from fifteen minutes on an unhurried drive.
FuelRadar's route estimate does not include the monetary toll, parking, vehicle wear, a traffic guarantee or the driver's value of time. Reported station prices can also change. Confirm the route, toll and final bowser price before leaving.
Toll-network and fee-checking guidance was checked against Service NSW, Transport Victoria, Queensland Transport and Main Roads, and Linkt. The worked example is FuelRadar arithmetic and does not quote a live route or fee. Sources checked 26 August 2026.
Only when the fuel saved and the value of time saved exceed the current toll fee. Compare both routes with the same vehicle, fuel price and trip direction.
Add the toll fee to the toll-route fuel cost, compare it with the free-route fuel cost, then divide the extra cash cost by the hours saved to find the break-even value of time.
The route planner can ask the routing provider to avoid toll roads where possible. Avoidance is a preference, so check any toll sections still reported and run the route again with tolls allowed.
When a provider road route is available, FuelRadar reports detected toll-road sections but does not calculate the monetary toll. Check the current fee with the government or operator calculator for the route, vehicle class and direction.
