Is there a good Petrol Spy alternative?

Yes. FuelRadar has been helping Australian drivers since 2020 and does the same core job as Petrol Spy: it puts station prices on a map and a list, on the website and in free iPhone and Android apps. Both are free to use and both show ads. The difference is what comes after the map. FuelRadar gives each price the time it was last updated, estimates where city prices are heading over the next 7 days, publishes how accurate those estimates have been, and has free alerts, a detour check, a route planner and a fuel logbook.

Where FuelRadar goes further

Timing: FuelRadar publishes a 7-day estimate for each capital city and a replay of how far past estimates were from the later city average, beside what "prices stay level" would have scored. Petrol Spy sends a notification when it is the best time to buy Unleaded, but we found no published accuracy figure for it. Alerts: a free FuelRadar account holds 2 alerts for a target price, a 24-hour drop or a saved station, and 25 saved stations. Planning: the detour check, route planner, trip-cost and fill-up calculators are free, and so is a fuel logbook for 2 vehicles with rego, insurance and service reminders.

When Petrol Spy is the better pick

Choose Petrol Spy if you also drive in New Zealand: its map covers Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and five more cities, and FuelRadar is Australia only. It has by far the larger community, with 183K App Store ratings at 4.8 and more than a million Android downloads, and it rewards price reports with a daily $25 fuel card draw. Its web map also lists AdBlue, which FuelRadar does not show.

Victoria and the other states

Petrol Spy lists official prices for Queensland, South Australia, NSW, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, and driver-submitted prices for Victoria. FuelRadar reads the official price program in every state and territory, including Service Victoria Servo Saver, and shows when it last updated each price. Whichever app you open, a recent price for your exact fuel type beats an older low one.

Ads and paid upgrades

Both apps are free with ads. Petrol Spy sells Premium to remove them: $2.89 a year or $14.99 once on the App Store. FuelRadar+ is bought on the website or in the FuelRadar app and adds more price alerts, cycle-low and best-nearby alerts, Fill Plan, Savings Tip, up to 1 year of price history and replay, where available, higher rewards and logbook limits, AI voiceovers and no website ads while signed in. The map, station prices, forecasts, calculators and 2 price alerts stay free for everyone.

Check whether the detour pays

A 6c per litre gap changes a 50-litre fill by $3 before travel costs. If the cheaper station is already on your route, take it. A cross-town detour can use part or all of that saving in fuel and time. FuelRadar's detour check takes the price gap, litres, return distance and your car's fuel use and tells you whether the cheaper station still saves money.
